On 13 January (subject to weather), Watford Borough Council partners Salix will commence restoration works at Waterfields Recreation Ground—an exciting new phase in the ground-breaking ‘Rediscovering the River Colne’ programme. These works will restore and enhance the river’s natural beauty, creating a healthier, more vibrant environment for both wildlife and the local community.

About the Works
Reconnecting the Floodplain - We will create natural wetland features designed to support a diverse range of plants and river species, improving the overall health of the river ecosystem.
Enhancing Flow Diversity - In-channel features will be added to encourage a healthier, more dynamic flow, ensuring the river remains robust and resilient.
Wildflower Beds - Repurposed silt from the river will be used to grow colourful wildflowers along the park’s edge, adding a vibrant new element to the local landscape.
Upon completion of these works—and alongside our partners at Groundwork—we will have transformed 52% of the River Colne through Watford, helping it to flourish like never before.
Temporary Impacts and Safety
A small number of trees may need to be removed to accommodate essential equipment.
Some temporary debris will be visible onsite during the process.
The park will remain open, and we advise residents to exercise caution when visiting.
Timings
Work is expected to take 4 weeks to complete, subject to weather conditions.
To minimise disruption to residents, works will take place Monday to Friday, 8am – 4pm.
Peter Taylor, Elected Mayor of Watford, said: “I’m delighted that these restoration works at Waterfields Recreation Ground will soon begin. This important project shows our commitment towards a greener town, by protecting and enhancing the River Colne for generations to come, in line with my manifesto promise. By reconnecting the floodplain and promoting biodiversity, we are ensuring it is a thriving environment for wildlife and a wonderful place to visit.”
Cllr Ian Stotesbury, Portfolio Holder for Transport and Sustainability, said: “These improvements mark a significant milestone in our ‘Rediscovering the River Colne’ programme. Not only will they rejuvenate this precious natural resource, but they will also bring new life and colour to Waterfields Recreation Ground—making it a place where people, plants, and wildlife can truly thrive.”
